What Is Solid Surfacing?

by admin on January 18, 2012

The marketplace can be a confusing place when you are looking at worktops, there is the good old fashioned laminate, solid wood, granite and now there is “solid surfacing”.

Now you might be saying “aren’t all surfaces solid”. Well, when we talk about “solid Surfaces” we mean in basic terms a mix of ground minerals combined with a resin which binds it all together. Some manufacturers add pieces of glass or other material for more special effects.

The first of this type was introduced to the UK in 1979 called “Corian”, available in over 100 colours in does need to be fitted by appointed fabricators. There are now many similar tops available on the market with names like Staron, Avonite, Hanex and LG Hi-Macs.

There are also less expensive alternatives that have a “solid surface” bonded to a chipboard core and are fitted in much the same way as laminate.

As with all things there is always a compromise but if you would like to discuss your worktop requirements further please do not hesitate to get in touch.
